Cabinet Materials That Handle Florida Humidity

There is a persistent belief that Florida humidity destroys kitchen cabinets. It mostly does not. A conditioned house in St. Cloud sits at a fairly stable humidity year-round, and every cabinet material on the market handles that without complaint.

What actually destroys cabinets here is liquid water, and there are four reliable sources of it: a slow supply-line drip under the sink, a dishwasher that leaks or vents steam into the cabinet beside it, a house left unconditioned for a Florida summer, and an outdoor kitchen built with indoor materials.

Choose materials against those four things and you have a kitchen that lasts.

The Box Materials, Ranked for Wet Conditions

Plywood — the practical best choice. Cross-laminated layers with waterproof glue. When plywood gets wet it swells slightly and, critically, comes back as it dries. A plywood sink base that survives a slow leak is still a cabinet afterwards. Look for a furniture-grade panel with a decent ply count and few voids.

Furniture-grade particleboard — fine everywhere except the wet spots. Modern particleboard is dimensionally stable, flat, holds a laminate finish beautifully, and is what the majority of cabinets on the market are made from, including good ones. Its single failure mode matters here though: once water gets into an unsealed edge it swells irreversibly. It does not dry back to shape. A swollen particleboard sink base is a replacement, not a repair.

MDF — excellent for doors, poor for wet boxes. Denser and more uniform than particleboard, with no grain to telegraph, which is why it is the best substrate for a painted door. Same water behavior as particleboard, and heavier.

Solid wood — beautiful, and the most seasonally active. Solid hardwood expands and contracts with moisture. This is fine in door frames and face frames, which are built to allow for it, and is the reason shaker panels float rather than being glued in. Large solid panels are the ones that split.

Marine-grade plywood and PVC — for outdoors and genuinely wet rooms. Overkill inside. Necessary outside.

The Sink Base Is the Whole Argument

If you specify nothing else deliberately, specify this cabinet.

The sink base is where cabinets die. It is the one cabinet worth over-specifying.

Every under-sink cabinet in Florida will meet water eventually — a compression fitting weeps, a disposal gasket fails, a filter housing sweats. What separates a nuisance from a replacement is the material and the details:

  • Plywood box, at minimum for this cabinet even if the rest of the kitchen is particleboard.
  • Sealed edges, especially the bottom panel's front edge where water pools.
  • A drip tray or applied sink-base liner, which costs very little and catches the slow leaks you would not otherwise notice for months.
  • Rollouts rather than a fixed shelf, so you can actually see the plumbing. Most under-sink leaks run for weeks because nobody looks.

Finishes and Why Edgebanding Matters More Than It Sounds

The finish is what keeps water out of the substrate, and edges are where it gets in.

  • Thermofoil is a vinyl film heat-formed over MDF. It is completely non-porous, wipes clean, and is genuinely excellent in humid rooms. Its one weakness is heat: sustained heat from an uninsulated oven or a poorly-vented dishwasher can lift the film at the edge. Modern oven insulation has largely solved this, but heat shields beside wall ovens are still worth fitting.
  • Laminate and melamine are hard-wearing and moisture-resistant across the face. The edge is the vulnerability.
  • Painted MDF or wood is repairable, which nothing else on this list is. A chip can be touched up; a lifted thermofoil edge cannot.
  • Edgebanding is not cosmetic. A properly applied, fully-sealed edgeband is what stops a panel drinking water from its cut edge. Thin, poorly-glued banding peels, and once it peels the edge is exposed. This is one of the clearest quality differences between cabinet lines and one of the least visible.

The Empty-House Problem

This one is specific to Florida and catches out snowbirds and rental owners.

A house closed up for the summer with the air conditioning off will reach very high interior humidity for months. That is the one indoor scenario where humidity alone causes real damage — doors swelling and binding, veneer lifting, and mold on interior surfaces.

The fix is not a cabinet material. It is leaving the system running with the thermostat set high, or fitting a humidistat. If a home is regularly left vacant, tell your designer: it changes the recommendation toward thermofoil and plywood and away from solid wood doors.

Outdoor and Lanai Kitchens Are a Different Category

Do not put indoor cabinetry on a lanai. Even under a screened enclosure and a roof, an outdoor kitchen sees driven rain, condensation, and daily temperature swings that no interior material tolerates.

What works outside:

  • Marine-grade polymer or HDPE. Effectively immune to water. The current default for quality outdoor cabinetry.
  • Stainless steel, ideally 304 grade. Excellent, though it heats up in sun and shows fingerprints.
  • Powder-coated aluminum. Light, stable, and a good match for a summer kitchen frame.
  • Masonry with a stone or porcelain top, with cabinet doors set into it.

What does not work outside: any wood-based panel, any particleboard, and any hinge or slide that is not stainless.

A Short Specification for a Florida Kitchen

If you want a single answer to take to a showroom, this is what we would build:

  1. 1Plywood boxes throughout, or at minimum in every sink and dishwasher-adjacent cabinet.
  2. 2Baltic birch drawer boxes with full-extension, soft-close undermount slides — all metal, no particleboard.
  3. 3Fully-sealed edgebanding on every exposed panel edge.
  4. 4Thermofoil or painted doors rather than large solid-wood panels, particularly if the home is ever left unconditioned.
  5. 5Stainless-steel hinges and slides in any room that is not fully conditioned — laundry, garage, lanai.
  6. 6A drip tray and rollouts in the sink base.

None of that is exotic and none of it is expensive relative to the project. It is simply the specification that matches the climate rather than the catalog.

Does Florida humidity ruin kitchen cabinets?
