How to Measure for Kitchen Cabinets: A Step-by-Step Guide

Ordering a kitchen full of cabinets is a point of no return. Boxes get cut to the numbers on the drawing, and a wall that turns out to be three-quarters of an inch shorter than the sheet says does not care how good the design looked. Measuring well is not complicated. It is fussy — and the fussiness is the entire job.

What follows is the same process our designers walk through on a first visit. Do it carefully and you will catch the expensive surprises while they are still free to fix.

What You Need Before You Start

  • A 25-foot steel tape measure. Not a cloth tape, not a phone app.
  • A 4-foot level, or a laser level if you have one.
  • Graph paper, or a clipboard and a pencil with an eraser.
  • A step stool, so ceiling measurements are read straight on instead of squinted at from below.
  • Your phone, for photos of every wall and every utility connection.

Work in inches, not feet and inches. "Ninety-four and three-eighths" travels between people and drawings far better than "seven foot ten and a bit." And write every number down as you take it — do not trust yourself to remember four of them at once.

Step 1: Sketch the Room First, Measure Second

Draw the kitchen roughly to shape before a single number goes on the page. Label the walls A, B, C, D, going clockwise from the main entry door, and mark every window, doorway, opening, and appliance in place. The sketch does not need to be pretty or to scale — it needs somewhere to hang the numbers.

Do this first and each measurement lands in a slot you already made for it. Do it second and you end up with a column of orphaned numbers and no idea which wall the 142 belonged to.

Step 2: Measure Each Wall at Three Heights

Walls are not straight. Take the full wall-to-wall length of each wall in three places:

Three readings per wall. The smallest one is the number the cabinets have to live inside.

Record the smallest of the three. That number is what the cabinets have to fit inside. A run designed to the largest reading will not go in, and the only fix at that point is a saw and a bad afternoon.

If the three differ by more than about half an inch, note it on the sketch. That is a bowed or out-of-plumb wall, and it changes how the run gets scribed and shimmed at install.

Step 3: Run Your Measurements from One Corner

Do not measure each item individually and add them up. Small errors compound, and by the far end of a 12-foot wall you can be an inch out with every individual number looking right.

Instead, hook your tape in one corner and take cumulative readings along the wall without moving it: to the near edge of the window, to the far edge of the window, to the near edge of the doorway, and so on, all the way to the opposite corner. Every number references the same starting point, so no error can travel.

Step 4: Ceiling Height, Floor Level, and What Is Hiding Above

Measure floor to ceiling in at least three spots per wall — corners and center. Ceilings sag, and in a room with a dropped soffit the usable height for tall cabinets is the soffit, not the ceiling.

Then check whether your floor is level. Set the level on the floor along each run and note the gap. A slab that falls half an inch over 12 feet is common here and entirely workable, but only if the person building the cabinets knows about it in advance.

Also record, if you have them:

  • Soffit or bulkhead depth and height, on every wall it crosses.
  • Crown molding you want to keep, and how much height it will need.
  • Whether new flooring is going in, and whether it runs under the cabinets or stops at them. This moves your finished floor height and every dimension above it.

Step 5: Windows, Doors, and Trim

For each opening, measure to the outside of the casing, not to the glass or the door slab — the trim is what a cabinet has to clear. Then add:

  • Height from finished floor to the window sill.
  • Height from finished floor to the top of the casing.
  • Which way each door swings, and how far it opens into the room.

A window sill that sits at 38 inches will not clear a 36-inch countertop with a backsplash, and it is far better to learn that now than on installation day.

Step 6: Plumbing, Electrical, Gas, and Ventilation

Mark all of these on the sketch, each with a distance from the nearest corner and a height off the floor:

  • Center of the sink drain, and the hot and cold supply lines.
  • Gas stub-out, if you cook on gas.
  • Every outlet, switch, and the electrical panel if it is in the room.
  • The dishwasher and refrigerator water lines.
  • HVAC registers and returns, floor and ceiling both.
  • The range hood duct, and whether it exits through the wall or the roof.

Anything in this list that has to move is a trade, a permit, or both. Finding all of it up front is what keeps a schedule honest.

Step 7: Measure the Actual Appliances

Write down the brand and full model number of every appliance you are keeping or have already bought, then measure the real thing:

  • Width, depth, and height of the unit itself.
  • Depth with the door open, plus handle projection. A counter-depth refrigerator is only counter-depth until you add the handles.
  • Required clearances from the manufacturer's spec sheet — sides, top, and back.
  • Door and drawer swing, and whether an adjacent wall or cabinet will block it.

Manufacturer spec sheets are free and downloadable, and they list the rough opening the appliance actually needs. Use them. Cabinet openings get built to the appliance, never the other way around.

Step 8: Check Your Corners for Square

Measure the diagonals of the room, corner to opposite corner. If the two diagonals match, the room is square. If they do not, one or more corners is out — which is normal, and which is exactly why fillers exist.

For any corner where two cabinet runs meet, hold your level against both walls and note which way they lean. A corner that is out by a quarter inch is absorbed by a filler strip. One that is out by an inch needs to be designed around.

Stock sizes are a useful yardstick even when the cabinets will be custom-built:

  • Base cabinets: 34 1/2 inches high without the countertop, 24 inches deep, in 3-inch width increments. A 1 1/2-inch countertop brings the finished surface to the standard 36 inches.
  • Wall cabinets: 12 inches deep, commonly 30, 36, or 42 inches high, hung 18 inches above the countertop.
  • Tall cabinets: 84, 90, or 96 inches high, either 12 or 24 inches deep.
  • Toe kick: roughly 4 1/2 inches high and 3 inches deep.
  • Countertop overhang: about 1 1/2 inches past the front of the cabinet box.
  • Walkways: 42 inches minimum between opposing runs, 48 inches if two people cook at once.

The Mistakes We See Most Often

  1. 1Measuring the old cabinets instead of the walls. The cabinets coming out may have been wrong, shimmed, or scribed. Measure the room.
  2. 2Rounding up. Always round down, to the nearest 1/16 inch. A cabinet that is a hair small disappears behind a filler. A cabinet that is a hair large does not go in.
  3. 3Forgetting the baseboard. If it is staying, cabinets have to sit in front of it or it has to come off behind them. Decide now.
  4. 4No filler at the walls. Without one, a door or drawer at the end of a run binds against the wall and a corner handle collides with its neighbor. Plan 1 1/2 to 3 inches wherever a run dies into a wall or turns a corner.
  5. 5Designing the refrigerator opening from the fridge's width. It needs its listed clearances too, and room for the doors to open past 90 degrees if the drawers inside are ever coming out.
  6. 6Measuring once. Measure everything twice, on two different days if you can. Fresh eyes catch transposed digits.

One Note About Central Florida Homes

Concrete block with stucco does not behave like framed drywall. Exterior walls in older St. Cloud and Kissimmee homes are frequently out of plumb by half an inch or more from floor to ceiling, and slab floors settle. Neither is a problem for a custom cabinet run — everything gets scribed to what is actually there — but both are a problem for a stock box ordered off a number someone took at eye level.

Newer builds in Lake Nona, Tohoqua, and Sunbridge tend to measure much closer to true, though a dropped soffit above the wall cabinets is still common and still needs recording.

When to Hand the Tape to Someone Else

Measuring your own kitchen is genuinely useful. It tells you whether an island fits, roughly what a layout will cost, and what questions to ask. It is the right way to start.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate do kitchen cabinet measurements need to be?

To the nearest 1/16 of an inch, and always rounded down rather than up. Cabinet runs are built to fill a specific opening, and filler strips absorb a small shortfall. There is no equivalent fix for a run that is too long.

Should I measure with the old cabinets still in place?

You can, and it is worth doing for a rough layout, but the numbers are provisional. The existing cabinets may have been shimmed, scribed, or simply installed wrong. Final measurements should be taken from bare walls once the old kitchen is out.

What is the standard height for kitchen wall cabinets?

Wall cabinets are typically hung 18 inches above the countertop, which puts the bottom edge at 54 inches off the floor. In a standard 8-foot ceiling, a 42-inch wall cabinet then runs cleanly to the ceiling.

How much space do I need between opposing cabinet runs?

Plan on 42 inches of clear walkway as a minimum, and 48 inches if two people will regularly cook at the same time. Measure from the front edge of the countertop, not from the wall.

Do I need to measure my appliances, or is the model number enough?

Get both. The model number lets us pull the manufacturer's spec sheet with the required rough opening and clearances, and measuring the unit confirms it is what you think it is — including handle projection and how deep it sits with the door open.
